Bible Verse: John 6:27 (NIV)
“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
Gracious and Loving Father, we are so often caught up in the pursuit of fleeting pleasures and momentary sustenance. Just as you fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fish, you continually remind us of the sustenance that is everlasting. Lord Jesus, you have offered us the Bread of Life, which is not just for our bodily needs but for our eternal souls. Help us, O Lord, to hunger and thirst not just for earthly bread, but for the enduring food that you provide – the food that feeds our souls, renews our spirits, and grants us eternal life. May we always be reminded of the imperishable nature of your love and grace. Strengthen our resolve to seek you, the true source of life, in every moment, and guide us to feast upon your word and your presence. Amen.
In John 6:27, Jesus speaks to the crowd following Him, a crowd that had just witnessed the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fish. Their pursuit was primarily for the physical bread, a meal that satisfies momentarily. However, Jesus points them to a higher, eternal reality – the food that endures to eternal life. This is a profound teaching on priorities. While it is essential to care for our bodily needs, Jesus teaches that our eternal sustenance should be of paramount importance. The “food” that Jesus speaks of is not just literal bread but the spiritual nourishment and sustenance that come from a relationship with Him, encapsulated in His later declaration, “I am the Bread of Life.” This lesson is especially crucial for all believers as it beckons us to invest our energies, time, and resources in pursuits that have eternal significance rather than fleeting satisfaction. The “seal of approval” from God the Father on Jesus emphasizes His authority and authenticity as the true provider of this eternal sustenance.
